GMA fumes over delayed vehicle tax waiver

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed frustration over the delay in the implementation of the vehicle importation tax waiver for medical professionals, citing the change in government as the reason for the halt.

The tax waiver was agreed upon as part of the Conditions of Service signed on March 27, 2024, between the GMA and the government.

The waiver, which commenced in July 2024, aimed to enable medical doctors and dentists to secure vehicles for their commute to work and response to emergencies.

According to the Ghana Medical Association, the change in government has resulted in a halt in processing waivers, leaving some applications pending final approval by the Ministry of Finance.

This has caused vehicles to be stuck at the port, accumulating charges and risking confiscation or auction. The GMA has been engaging stakeholders to resolve the delays and resume the waiver.

“While we engage the Minister of Health and the Minister for Finance, we appeal to colleagues who have applied to exercise restraint as we work to see the way forward,” the statement noted.

The GMA advised applicants with the means to consider clearing their cars to minimize accumulation of port and demurrage charges.

The Association also cautioned members planning to import vehicles using the waiver to hold their plans until the issue is resolved.

“The NEC assures members that it is actively engaging to ensure the vehicle importation tax waiver… is restored as soon as possible,” GMA stated.
