The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued an impact-based weather warning, cautioning residents in several parts of the country to prepare for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, gusty winds and possible flooding overnight.
According to the agency, a rainstorm currently near Ghana’s border is expected to move steadily across the country, generating widespread cloud cover and thunderstorms of varying intensities.
“As indicated in the earlier update, the rainstorm is currently over the border of Ghana and it is expected to propagate steadily across the country, inducing cloudiness and producing thunderstorms with rain of varying intensities,” the agency said in its weather warning issued on June 10.
GMet also indicated that another storm system developing over northern Benin could affect Ghana’s northern sector later in the night and into the morning hours.
“A separate storm over northern Benin is likely [to] sweep across the upper regions later in the night into the morning hours,” the statement added.
The agency warned that gusty winds could accompany the storms and increase the risk of damage in affected areas.
It further cautioned that “localised flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas are likely to occur.”
The warning places parts of the Volta, Eastern, Oti and Northern regions under a high-risk category between 9:30 pm and 3:00 a
m, while Greater Accra, Central, Ashanti and Bono East regions are expected to experience similar conditions between 10:30 pm. and 4:00 am.
Western, Western North, Bono, Ahafo and Savannah regions are also forecast to experience thunderstorms and rainfall later in the night through to the early hours of Thursday.
GMet has advised the public to remain alert, monitor official weather updates and take the necessary precautions, particularly in flood-prone communities.
