GNFS urges caution as it steps in to ease heat stress in Accra’s busiest markets

The Ghana National Fire Service on Monday stepped in to reduce heat stress in Accra’s Central Business District, spraying water in crowded commercial areas to prevent heat-related emergencies during the festive rush.

The intervention took place on December 22 as shoppers packed markets and major streets across the CBD ahead of Christmas. Fire officers used water tenders to cool down high-traffic zones, where prolonged exposure to heat and congestion posed risks to public safety.

GNFS officials said the move was a preventive measure aimed at protecting shoppers, traders and street vendors from heat exhaustion, dehydration and crowd-related incidents common during peak festive periods.

The Service also advised the public to take personal safety seriously while shopping. Shoppers were encouraged to go out early, drink enough water, avoid staying too long under the sun and comply with safety instructions from security and emergency officials on the ground.

With crowds expected to grow as Christmas approaches, the Fire Service said it will continue monitoring busy areas and urged the public to cooperate to ensure a safe and incident-free festive season.
