GOC President Richard Akpokavie Shares Vision for Ghana’s Sports Future in 2026

The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie, has shared a powerful message for the future of sports in the country. Reflecting on 2025, Akpokavie celebrated the significant achievements of Team Ghana, including remarkable performances at the 1st Africa School Games and the African Youth Games.

He highlighted the collective effort of athletes, coaches, and National Federations that helped elevate Ghana’s sporting profile.

In his New Year message, President Akpokavie recognized the hard work and commitment of Ghana’s athletes who have made the nation proud on the global stage. The successes of Ghana’s youth athletes, the exceptional performances at international competitions, and the growth of individual federations demonstrate the country’s sporting potential.

With the support of the GOC, key stakeholders, and the Ministry of Sports & Recreation, Ghana has made strides in securing a bright future for the sporting community. Akpokavie emphasized the ongoing support for National Federations, noting that funding for competitions, affiliation fees, and technical guidance have been critical to fostering the development of athletes.

As Ghana continues to rise in the world of sports, the GOC is launching a new four-year Strategy Plan to lay the foundation for long-term success. This comprehensive plan, set to launch in the coming days, will focus on professionalizing Ghana’s sports structures, enhancing governance, and providing the resources necessary for athletes to thrive. The GOC’s strategy aims to propel Ghana to the forefront of African sports, with a focus on youth development, gender equality, and the empowerment of women in sports.

“This new plan represents our commitment to ensuring sustainable success for Team Ghana at upcoming international events such as the Youth Olympics and Commonwealth Games. It’s a roadmap that will set us on a path to becoming a true sporting powerhouse,” said President Akpokavie.

Akpokavie reaffirmed the GOC’s pledge to continue championing athletes by providing the necessary resources and infrastructure to help them reach their full potential. With a focus on both athlete development and women’s empowerment, the GOC is determined to build an environment where every athlete, regardless of gender, can excel.
