The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has donated relief items worth GH¢150,000 to support families affected by recent flooding in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.
The donation, presented to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Tarkwa on Wednesday, is expected to help ease the hardship faced by residents as recovery efforts continue after last week’s heavy rains.
About 16 communities within the mining company’s catchment area were affected by the floods, which destroyed property and disrupted the lives of many households.
The relief package included 36 bags of rice, 16 boxes of cooking oil, 50 bags of cement, 30 roofing sheets, 10 packs of raincoats, 10 packs of life jackets and 10 pairs of Wellington boots.
Presenting the items, the Executive Secretary of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, Abdel-Razak Yakubu, said the Foundation’s immediate focus was to help affected families meet their basic needs while reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts continued.
He said the Foundation was among the first organisations to respond to NADMO’s appeal for support, describing the donation as part of its longstanding commitment to the welfare of communities within its operational areas.
“We remain committed to supporting the wellbeing of our host communities,” Mr Yakubu said.
NADMO is leading efforts to provide relief and coordinate recovery activities in the affected communities.
