Goldbod initiative generates $2.7 billion in gold exports, reforms sector – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Goldbod initiative, a key component of his administration’s mining sector reforms, has already generated $2.7 billion in revenue from gold exports within the first four months of 2025.

Speaking at the Global Mining Summit on Monday, June 2, President Mahama praised the initiative as a transformative force in Ghana’s gold industry, highlighting its role in enhancing transparency, curbing illegal mining, and maximizing returns on the country’s mineral wealth.

“The Goldbod, a key plank in my administration’s strategy to reform the gold mining sector and ensure maximum benefit for Ghanaians from our gold resources, has taken off,” he said.

“In its short existence, it has sanitised the gold sector, ensuring maximum returns from our gold exports.”

According to him, the $2.7 billion in revenue was generated through exports managed jointly by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and the newly introduced Goldbod platform between January and April.

The figure, he added, is expected to rise steadily throughout the year.

Launched earlier this year, the GoldBod initiative aims to centralize and regulate Ghana’s gold export processes. It is part of a broader strategy to formalize the gold trade, clamp down on illegal mining operations, and improve institutional oversight in the sector.

President Mahama emphasized that the reforms are not only generating higher revenues but also increasing accountability and efficiency across the gold value chain.

“These measures ensure that Ghana is no longer shortchanged in the global gold market,” he noted.

“We are now able to track our gold exports, plug revenue leakages, and guarantee that the benefits of our resources reach the Ghanaian people.”
