Host of Metro TV’s flagship programme Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has responded to criticism from Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu Kwamankese, who said the show now feels more like an NPP comedy than the serious current affairs programme it once was.
Kwakye Ofosu, who serves as Minister in charge of Government Communication under the ruling NDC administration, remarked recently that, “These days, I don’t see what Good Evening Ghana is anymore. It looks more like an NPP satirical show than the top leading current affairs show we had decades ago.”
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana hosted by Moro Awudu, Paul Adom-Otchere pushed back against the criticism, saying the programme continues to perform strongly.
“Our show’s ratings are better now. We are putting together a product and doing as much as we can to make sure it keeps improving,” he said. “Good Evening Ghana has been running since 2001 and we believe we are still the top current affairs conversation every Tuesday and Thursday.”
He added that while he welcomes feedback from viewers, the team remains confident in their work. “If an important person like an MP and a Minister describes himself as a former viewer because he doesn’t like the format anymore, we take that as feedback,” he said.
“But we believe we are doing solid work, especially in analysing court cases and explaining complex legal and political issues in ways people understand.”
Adom-Otchere emphasised that many viewers both in Ghana and abroad still rely on the programme for clarity on national issues and enjoy its short political documentaries.
He also rejected any suggestion that the show is politically closed off. “No politician, whether from the NDC or NPP, is prevented from attending Good Evening Ghana. The door is open to everyone,” he said.
