President John Dramani Mahama has led a nationwide call for action as thousands of Ghanaians participate in a two-day general clean-up exercise aimed at restoring communities affected by the devastating June 29 floods.
The government declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days across seven flood-affected regions. The initiative focuses on clearing choked drains, removing refuse, and reducing the risk of further flooding as the rainy season continues.
President Mahama has urged all citizens, community leaders, government appointees, and local authorities to work together to improve sanitation and protect lives. Ministers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, security agencies, and volunteers have been directed to take active roles in the exercise by leading cleanup activities within their respective communities.
To support the operation, the Presidency announced that some markets and shops would temporarily suspend business during the clean-up period to encourage widespread public participation and ensure the exercise is carried out effectively.
The nationwide campaign follows the deadly floods of June 29, which caused loss of life, displaced families, and damaged thousands of homes across several regions. Authorities say the cleanup is part of a broader strategy to strengthen disaster preparedness and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Environmental experts and civil society organizations have welcomed the initiative, emphasizing that maintaining clean drainage systems and preventing indiscriminate waste disposal are essential to reducing flood risks. They have also encouraged citizens to make community sanitation a continuous responsibility rather than a one-time activity.
