“Government committed to providing bonus payments to Premier League players” – Kofi Adams

Kofi Adams, the newly appointed Minister of Sports and Recreation, has stated that the John Mahama-led government is on track to fulfill its promise to provide bonus payments to Premier League players.

In an interview with Michael Kofi Oduro on Metro Sports, he shared that he plans to soon meet with the owners of Professional League clubs to discuss the details and formalities of the initiative.

He believes this initiative will improve players’ income, encouraging them to stay and play locally, which will enhance team cohesion and make it easier for them to represent the national team

“We will begin discussions with the Professional League club owners to determine the modalities and formalities for this. While this hasn’t happened yet, we are fully committed to this manifesto promise because we believe it will help increase the income levels of these players,” he said.

“This will encourage them to stay and play here, rather than enduring difficult journeys to work in other areas, hoping for better financial opportunities. By staying and playing here, they will be more likely to feature in our national teams, leading to stronger cohesion.”

He highlighted that past national teams, which had players from local clubs, showed better coordination and performance compared to today’s teams, where players are scattered globally.

“In the past, when national teams had players from clubs like Hearts of Oak, Kotoko, or RTU, we saw better team chemistry and formation. Today, however, players are often scattered around the world, and assembling them in a short time for major matches can result in a lack of coordination,” he added.

Kofi Adams also mentioned that his office aims to ensure that Women Premier League and Division One League clubs will eventually benefit from similar bonus allowances.
