Government declares curfew in Nalerigu Township

The government has imposed a night curfew on Nalerigu Township and surrounding areas in the North East Region following security concerns.

The curfew, announced by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, takes effect from Thursday, December 18, 2025, and will run daily from 5:00 pm to 6:00 am. It was imposed on the advice of the National Security Council through an Executive Instrument.

In a statement, the government urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth and residents of the area to exercise restraint and to resolve differences through peaceful and lawful means. Authorities appealed to the community to channel their efforts into restoring and maintaining peace.

Alongside the curfew, a total ban has been placed on the possession of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons within Nalerigu and its environs. Security agencies have been directed to arrest and prosecute anyone found in possession of such items.

Additional restrictions have also been introduced. The movement of motorbikes has been banned, as well as the wearing of smocks. The sale of fuel in containers is prohibited, and unlawful assembly is not permitted under the new measures.

The Interior Ministry said the restrictions are aimed at preventing further escalation of tensions and ensuring the safety of residents in the area.

The statement was signed by Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Minister for the Interior.
