Government engages Osu residents on Social Protection

Residents of Osu and key stakeholders have engaged the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection on ways to improve social protection delivery and address challenges affecting vulnerable people in the community.

The engagement, held on Friday, September 11, 2026, formed part of the Ministry’s ongoing Community Dialogue Series, being organised by the Social Protection Directorate in communities across the Greater Accra Region to improve public understanding of government’s social protection programmes and give residents an opportunity to share their experiences and concerns.

Speaking at the engagement, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, called for stronger measures to protect vulnerable persons and ensure that government interventions effectively respond to the needs of communities.

She said the community dialogues were not simply about educating residents on government programmes but also about listening to them and gaining a better understanding of the difficulties they encounter when accessing social protection services.

A major focus of the discussions was the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, particularly the ongoing expansion and enrolment of beneficiaries. Residents were taken through eligibility requirements as well as the rights and benefits of people enrolled under the programme.

Participants also used the opportunity to seek clarification on available social protection interventions and raise concerns about access to services.

The engagement also addressed child protection and safety. Pupils from some basic schools in the area received education on their rights and were encouraged to report harassment, abuse and other situations that could threaten their safety and wellbeing.

The dialogue provided a platform for residents, government officials and other stakeholders to interact directly, share experiences and offer suggestions aimed at improving the accessibility and delivery of social protection services.

The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, attended the engagement alongside the Municipal Chief Executive and other stakeholders.

The Ministry said the Community Dialogue Series would continue in other communities across the country as part of efforts to bring social protection interventions closer to the people and strengthen community participation in their delivery.
