The Government of Ghana has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Dagbon Overlord Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, with President John Dramani Mahama extending his condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and the nation while paying tribute to the late King’s enduring legacy of peace, unity and reconciliation.
In a statement issued on Monday, 13th July 2026, and signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government described the passing of the Yaa Naa as a great national loss.
President Mahama conveyed his deepest sympathies to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and all Ghanaians during what he described as a period of immense grief.
The statement said Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II would be remembered as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign brought healing, reconciliation and lasting peace to Dagbon after years of conflict.
According to the government, his unwavering commitment to unity, stability and the welfare of his people created an environment that supported development and strengthened collaboration between traditional authorities and the state in advancing progress across Dagbon and Ghana.
The government also paid tribute to the late King’s life of service, describing his contribution to peace, leadership and national development as invaluable.
It expressed the hope that his wisdom, leadership and dedication to peace would continue to inspire future generations.
The statement ended with a prayer for the late Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II to rest in perfect peace.
