Ghana’s national robotics team has won top honours at an international competition in the United States, with the government announcing plans to expand robotics training for school children across the country.
The team secured first place in the game category at the 2026 Robofest World Championships held in Michigan.
The challenge, themed Building Bridges, required teams to design and programme autonomous robots capable of simulating construction tasks by moving and positioning materials with precision. The competition tested navigation, object handling and problem solving.
The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, welcomed the team back in Accra and described their achievement as a national success.
“This is a national success. We all benefited from the nation’s institutions’ success,” he said.
The minister said the ministry would work with the National Communications Authority and other agencies to launch a robotics summer boot camp in July.
He added that funding would be sought to ensure participation from less privileged schools.
He said robotics could give young people a productive alternative to passive screen use while encouraging them to develop solutions to real national challenges.
“Getting to the top is the easy part. Staying at the top is even harder,” he told the students. “If you continue the hard work and passion that took you to number one, nothing will stop you from remaining there.”
He also said the government would continue to support hackathons, cybersecurity competitions and other initiatives aimed at developing a pipeline of technology talent.
He urged parents and communities to support young innovators, adding that the team’s success showed Ghanaian students could compete and excel globally.
