The government has announced it will pay the medical bills of children injured in Thursday’s collision between a school bus and a tipper truck at Dzorwulu, as officials seek to reassure anxious families following the crash.
The assurance was given by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, during a visit to some of the injured children receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital on Friday.
The crash, which occurred on the Dzorwulu-Accra Mall stretch on 30 July 2026, left several schoolchildren injured and prompted an emergency response involving security agencies, firefighters, health workers and members of the public.
Speaking to families at the hospital, Dr Lartey described the incident as heartbreaking and expressed her sympathy to the children and their relatives.
She said the government, under President John Dramani Mahama, would bear the full cost of the children’s treatment to ensure parents could focus on supporting their recovery rather than worrying about medical expenses.
“The priority now is the full recovery of every child,” she said, assuring families that the government would continue to stand by them throughout the recovery process.
The minister praised the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, other security agencies, emergency responders and members of the public whose swift intervention helped rescue the children and get them to hospital quickly.
She also commended doctors, nurses and management of the 37 Military Hospital for their prompt response and commitment to treating the injured children.
Dr Lartey said investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing and expressed confidence that the appropriate authorities would establish what happened and ensure accountability where necessary.
She is expected to visit other injured children receiving treatment at different health facilities in the coming days as part of the government’s continued support for the affected families.
The minister was accompanied by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Marian W. A. Kpakpah, and the ministry’s Director of Social Protection, Madam Francisca Atuluk.
