Government’s handling of galamsey crisis a ‘national shame’ – Dr. Sharif Mahmud Khalid

A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Finance and Economic Committee, Dr. Sharif Mahmud Khalid, has expressed strong concerns over the President Nana Akufo-Addo government’s approach to addressing the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities, describing it as a “national shame and disaster”.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Dr. Khalid argued that the government is targeting the wrong people in its fight against galamsey.

“Most often than not, we scapegoat the wrong people… those that we find on the galamsey sites are not the actual funders of galamsey,” he said.

According to Dr. Khalid, the real culprits are those who fund and benefit from the illegal activity, often hiding in plain sight.

“The actual funders are those that are probably in pink striped suits, in London, in Geneva or somewhere else, having a fantastic time… or they are on lead roles or front roles in our churches or mosques. They are playing critical roles in our societies, some probably even council of state members and here we are, some are even ministers of state.”

Dr. Khalid emphasized that using force alone is not the solution to combating galamsey.

“Using guns and boots is not the way to fight galamsey,” he stressed, calling for a more comprehensive approach to address the issue.”
