Gov’t Failing To Uphold Job Creation Promises – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has accused the Majority Caucus of failing to prioritize the welfare of its own members, casting doubt on the government’s ability to fulfill its broader promises of job creation for Ghanaians.

During a heated debate over the Appropriation Bill No. 2, 2025, on December 18, 2025, Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, highlighted serious concerns regarding the government’s failure to adequately cater for its 189 Majority Members of Parliament. Afenyo-Markin argued that if the government cannot support its own lawmakers, it is unlikely to deliver on its promises to create jobs for the wider population.

In his remarks, Afenyo-Markin criticized the Majority Caucus for not fulfilling their leadership duties, alleging that some Majority MPs were left to travel to parliamentary sittings using commercial vehicles due to a lack of proper support from the government. The Minority Leader’s claims point to a breakdown in the government’s internal management, raising questions about its effectiveness in addressing national issues like unemployment.

“If the government cannot take care of its own MPs, how can they take care of the youth and citizens of this country? They promised to create jobs, yet we have MPs who struggle to even make it to Parliament,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

The Minority Leader also took aim at the government’s much-publicized job creation agenda, pointing out the irony of a government that has failed to provide basic support to its MPs while claiming to solve the country’s job crisis.

Afenyo-Markin pointed to government promises to create one job with three shifts, claiming that such rhetoric rings hollow when MPs themselves are grappling with basic needs. “The backbenchers in this House are suffering. How can a government that has rendered its own MPs ineffective possibly create jobs for the unemployed youth?” he questioned.
