Finance Minister-designate Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has clarified that, despite ongoing speculation, he has no immediate plans to request additional funds from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, Ato Forson stated that his previous comments on the matter were misrepresented in media reports.
“I didn’t say I was going to request additional finance from the IMF. It’s inaccurate reportage. What I said was that we could request additional finance if the need arises,” he explained.
According to him, his remarks were speculative and contingent on future developments.
He underscored the importance of flexibility in managing the nation’s economic affairs, noting that seeking additional IMF support should not be ruled out entirely, but would only be considered if circumstances warranted it.
Ato Forson urged the media to exercise caution in reporting his statements to avoid unnecessary public misinterpretation.
He reaffirmed his commitment to prudent financial management and pledged to explore all viable options to ensure economic stability for the country.
This clarification comes after reports suggested that Ghana’s new government could seek extra funding from the IMF during its current three-year program with the lender.
