Gov’t moves to revoke mining regulations to tackle “Galamsey”

The Acting Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has initiated legal steps to revoke existing mining regulations in a renewed effort to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Mr. Buah has formally written to the Attorney General requesting the immediate withdrawal of Legislative Instrument 2462 and its amended version, L.I. 2501. The minister explained that the revocation is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s regulatory framework and creating a united front against the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

According to the ministry, the move will pave the way for stricter oversight of mining activities and bring an end to the widespread pollution of water bodies and destruction of forest reserves linked to galamsey.

In his letter, Mr. Buah expressed confidence that the Environmental Protection Agency has the capacity and guidelines necessary to regulate the sector effectively.

He said consolidating the legal framework will guarantee compliance with environmental and social standards while promoting responsible mining practices across the country.

The ministry believes the new measures will not only protect natural resources but also safeguard communities that depend on them for survival.
