Gov’t releases next LEAP payments to support 1.5m Ghanaians

The Government of Ghana has begun the nationwide disbursement of funds under the 98th cycle of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme, bringing financial relief to more than 1.5 million people across the country.

At a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, October 9, 2025, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, described the programme as a lifeline for many vulnerable households.

“Cycle after cycle, we have turned our commitment into concrete action. This consistency is the bedrock upon which we are building a Ghana where the most vulnerable are shielded from hardship and empowered to live with dignity,” she said.

Under the current cycle, 350,580 households will receive cash transfers ranging from GH₵320 for one-member households to GH₵530 for families with four or more eligible members.

Dr Lartey expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership in sustaining the programme and ensuring the passage of the Social Protection Bill, which now secures social protection as a permanent part of national development.

She noted that the Ministry’s work goes beyond financial aid to focus on human capital development and productive inclusion, enabling beneficiaries to engage in sustainable livelihoods.

“LEAP is not just a safety net, but a springboard for sustainable economic and human development,” she said.

The Ministry has also introduced measures to strengthen the programme, including indexing cash grants against inflation to maintain their value, expanding coverage to 400,000 households by the end of 2025, and partnering with GhIPSS to enable LEAP payments through the Ghana Pay mobile system to promote financial inclusion.

Dr Lartey urged beneficiaries to take part in ongoing reassessment and verification exercises and encouraged the public to report any fraud through the Ministry’s toll-free lines 0800 800 800 or 0800 900 900.

With the Social Protection Act now in effect, the Minister reaffirmed government’s resolve to build a stronger and more inclusive Ghana where no citizen is left behind.

The LEAP Programme remains one of the pillars of Ghana’s social welfare system, providing cash support and hope to thousands of low-income families nationwide.
