Gov’t to roll out 350 health posts alongside free primary healthcare programme

Government is set to expand access to basic healthcare services across the country with the construction of 350 health posts in public spaces, as part of the rollout of its Free Primary Health Care Programme.

This initiative will complement the distribution of over 24,000 pieces of hospital equipment to health facilities nationwide, aimed at strengthening service delivery, particularly at the primary care level.

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed this in a social media post ahead of the programme’s official launch.

He explained that the health posts will be strategically located in high-traffic areas such as bus stations, markets, and schools to improve accessibility to essential healthcare services.

According to him, “350 Health Posts will be put up in public places such as bus stations, markets, schools among others, to make basic health care accessible to all including the 35% of Ghanaians who are not on the NHIS.”

The intervention is expected to bridge gaps in healthcare access, particularly for underserved populations who remain outside the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu further revealed that preparations are already underway, following an inspection exercise with the Minister for Health.

“I stepped out earlier today with the Minister for Health to see the beginning of the assembling of these fully-equipped Health Posts,” he noted.

He added that the initiative will not replace existing infrastructure but rather reinforce it, stating, “This add on to existing health facilities and those under construction.”
