Gov’t to upgrade Ridge Hospital into full teaching hospital – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a major healthcare reform agenda for the Greater Accra Region, including plans to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) into a fully functional teaching hospital with expanded capacity and enhanced medical training capabilities.

Speaking during his thank you tour in Dodowa, President Mahama emphasized the urgent need to transform healthcare outcomes in the region and ensure more equitable access to quality medical services.

“We will aim to transform the quality of outcomes for our healthcare,” Mahama said. “We intend to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital into a full teaching hospital.”

The planned transformation includes the construction of Ridge Hospital Phase 2, which will significantly boost the hospital’s capacity to function as a teaching and referral center. The hospital will also be affiliated with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, a move aimed at enhancing specialist training and reducing referrals outside the region.

“This will improve our ability to train specialists locally and provide advanced care within the region,” Mahama noted.

To improve access to primary healthcare, especially in underserved and fast-growing communities, Mahama announced the expansion of CHPS compounds in areas such as: Botianor,
Kpong,  Shai-Osudoku.

These expanded CHPS facilities will bring essential services closer to the people, reducing the need for long-distance travel for basic healthcare.

“In all existing and new CHPS compounds, we will include accommodation for the health workers who man them,” Mahama added, stressing the importance of ensuring that medical staff are well-supported in the communities they serve.
