The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has announced a series of measures to ease growing congestion at the Tema Port, following a surge in import traffic and a build-up of empty containers.
The Authority in a statement issued on Friday, August 7, 2026, said the congestion was being worsened by road traffic challenges, resulting in delays in the evacuation of both laden and empty containers.
According to GPHA, the situation is not unique to Ghana, with “similar challenges” being experienced at several ports across the West African sub-region.
The Authority said it has therefore placed relevant stakeholders on “heightened operational alert” while working with shipping lines and terminal operators to improve the movement of containers in and out of the port.
Among the measures being implemented is an acceleration of empty container evacuation through increased vessel calls.
GPHA is also strengthening truck deployment and container transfer operations while working to improve the management of empty containers, optimise yard space and ease traffic within the port.
The Authority said the interventions are aimed at improving cargo flow and making better use of the available terminal capacity.
GPHA is also urging importers, clearing agents and cargo owners to move quickly to clear their consignments.
“The prompt evacuation of cargo is essential to creating additional space within the port,” the Authority said, adding that faster clearance would help improve operational efficiency and ensure the continuous flow of international trade.
The congestion comes as import volumes continue to grow, placing additional pressure on the port’s existing capacity and the road network serving the facility.
GPHA said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to introduce measures it considers necessary to return operations to normal.
It assured the trading community and the public that it remains committed to maintaining what it described as a “safe, efficient and competitive port system” to support Ghana’s trade and economic activity.
The Authority also appealed for the cooperation of stakeholders as the measures are implemented.
“GPHA remains resolute in its commitment to maintaining a safe, efficient and competitive port system that supports Ghana’s trade and economic growth,” the statement said.
