The curtain came down on the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season in dramatic fashion on Sunday, with survival battles, top-four finishes, stunning comebacks, and individual brilliance defining a thrilling final day across the country.
While champions Medeama SC had already secured the title, the final round delivered plenty of emotion – from heartbreak in Tamale to jubilation in Swedru, and a record-breaking performance in Bibiani.
Hearts end season in style against champions
Hearts of Oak produced one of their finest performances of the campaign to defeat champions Medeama SC 4-2 in an entertaining six-goal thriller at the Accra Sports Stadium,
The Phobians finished strongly to secure third place, with Hamza Issah and Mawuli Wayo leading the charge. Issah opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute before Wayo doubled the lead after the break. Medeama fought back through Kingsley Braye, but an own goal from Jacob Amu Mensah restored Hearts’ control before Issah added a fourth with a powerful header. Mensah later redeemed himself with Medeama’s second goal, but it proved only a consolation.
The emphatic victory ensured Hearts signed off a difficult but resilient season on a high note.
Swedru All Blacks pull off great escape
One of the stories of the day came at the Baba Yara Stadium, where Swedru All Blacks completed a dramatic survival mission with a spirited 2-1 comeback victory over Asante Kotoko.
An own goal by Clement Tutu had handed Kotoko the lead before half-time, leaving All Blacks staring at relegation. But the visitors responded superbly after the break, with Rudolf Mensah scoring a sensational bicycle kick to level matters before Williams Dankwah struck the winner.
Kotoko had a late opportunity to salvage a point, but Samba O’Neil missed from the penalty spot as All Blacks secured their top-flight status in dramatic fashion.
Heartsbreak for Nations despite Final-Day victory
Nations FC suffered the agony of relegation despite doing their part with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Karela United In Tamale.
Antwi Sarpong’s 15th-minute strike proved decisive as Nations claimed the result they desperately needed. However, unfavourable outcomes elsewhere meant the victory ultimately proved insufficient to preserve their Premier League status.
After consecutive defeats had left survival hanging by a thread, Nations fought bravely to the very end. Yet their fate was sealed, bringing a painful end to their top-flight campaign.
Still, hope remains. Nations now shift focus to the MTN FA Cup final against Dreams FC, where victory could secure CAF Confederation Cup qualification despite relegation.
