The Ghana Parliamentary Monitoring Organizations Network (GPMON) has commended the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for taking decisive action against Members of Parliament (MPs) who misconducted themselves during the vetting of ministerial nominees.
According to GPMON, the Speaker’s prompt investigation and decision to hold those responsible accountable is a necessary step in upholding the dignity and integrity of Parliament.
“Such actions will help restore discipline and ensure that parliamentary proceedings are conducted with the decorum expected of elected representatives,” the network stated.
GPMON also acknowledged Speaker Bagbin’s commitment to enforcing the Standing Orders of Parliament, emphasizing that strict enforcement of these rules is crucial in halting the decline in parliamentary discipline and rebuilding public confidence in democracy.
The network, comprising 16 civil society organizations, expressed keen interest in the outcome of the investigation and subsequent actions taken.
They recommended imposing severe punishments on those found culpable, along with surcharges to cover damages caused.
