GPRTU dismisses reports of imminent transport fare increase

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has debunked media reports suggesting an imminent increase in transport fares, clarifying that its recent call to government was rather an appeal for stability in fuel prices.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, October 8, 2025, the union expressed concern over what it described as a “misrepresentation” of its earlier appeal to the government on October 7.

“Further to our press statement yesterday 7th October 2025, where we appealed to the Government to ensure stability in the prices of fuel which is one of the major components that determines pricing of transport fares,” the statement said.

According to the GPRTU, some sections of the media had erroneously reported that the union was planning to increase transport fares in the next fuel pricing window – an interpretation the union insists is inaccurate.

“Unfortunately, various publications sought to create the impression that we want to increase transport fares in the next fuel pricing window,” the statement clarified.

The GPRTU noted that it is mindful of the economic implications of fare adjustments on ordinary citizens and has no immediate plans to review fares upward.

“We wish to state that the GPRTU of TUC is not oblivious to the fact that any increase in transport fares affects every facet of our society; we have no intention therefore to increase fares in the immediate timeline,” the statement emphasized.

The union, however, reiterated its plea to government to take steps to ensure stability in fuel prices during the last quarter of the year to prevent potential hardships for both transport operators and commuters.

“We wish to appeal to the Government for stability in fuel prices in this last quarter of the year,” the GPRTU added.

The union urged both drivers and commuters to “maintain the existing fares” and remain calm as it continues to engage relevant authorities on the issue.
