GRA Busts Major Tramadol Smuggling at Tema Port

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a massive consignment of undeclared Tramadol at the Tema Port, in a major breakthrough against drug trafficking and illicit trade.

In a press release dated March 3, 2026, the Authority confirmed that nine public officials — including five Customs officers and representatives from the Narcotics Control Commission, Port Security, the Energy Commission, and the Ghana Standards Authority — have been arrested and granted Police inquiry bail over their alleged involvement in the seizure.

The container, numbered TGHU6228715, was discovered to contain 299 cartons filled with 146,932,000 tablets of Tramadol Hydrochloride (250mg and 225mg), weighing approximately 34,847.2 kilograms. The shipment originated from the United Arab Emirates but had been falsely declared as household items such as kettles, blenders, pressing irons, and energy-saving bulbs.

The bust followed intelligence gathered by the Preventive Unit of the Customs Division, which led to the targeted detention of the container on February 26, 2026. A joint re-examination conducted on March 1, 2026, subsequently uncovered the concealed narcotics.

The operation highlights the strengthened enforcement drive under the leadership of GRA Commissioner-General, Mr. Anthony Kwesi Sarpong. His administration has intensified intelligence-led operations, tightened compliance systems, and enhanced inter-agency collaboration to safeguard Ghana’s borders and revenue streams.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to protecting national security, preserving public health, and maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s ports and trade corridors.

The seizure sends a clear warning that Ghana’s ports remain under strict surveillance, and any attempt to smuggle illicit goods or undermine the country’s revenue systems will be firmly dealt with.
