The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo (MP), has reiterated the urgent need for coordinated, long-term strategies to address flooding in the region, citing its devastating impact on lives and livelihoods.
Addressing the first Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) meeting, Madam Linda Ocloo noted that the region’s low-lying terrain makes it highly susceptible to flooding.
She called on all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to move beyond reactive emergency responses and commit to proactive flood mitigation.
“Flooding causes enormous damage and displaces many of our people. The cost to MMDAs and individuals is huge. We cannot afford to sit back,” Madam Ocloo stressed.
She referenced the somber 10th anniversary of the June 3rd twin disaster at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, reaffirming the region’s pledge of “Never Again.”
Under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, the RCC will collaborate with all 17 participating MMDAs and other high-risk districts to:
Regularly desilt drains
Enforce planning regulations
Demolish illegal structures, particularly near Ramsar sites and waterways
Madam Linda Ocloo disclosed that in collaboration with the Regional Security Council and other agencies, steps have already been taken to demolish unlawful structures obstructing natural water flow at Ramsar sites.
She emphasized the importance of preserving such areas as holding pools during heavy rainfall.
