The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has sounded a rallying call to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to intensify the fight against poor sanitation across the region.
Speaking at the 1st Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) meeting on Thursday, Madam Linda Ocloo described sanitation not just as an environmental concern but a pressing developmental priority.
She cited persistent issues such as open defecation, illegal dumping, choked drains, and poor waste disposal as critical threats to Accra’s transformation into a modern, inclusive, and resilient urban hub.
“Sanitation has become a key performance indicator (KPI) for all MMDCEs in line with the President’s directive,” she emphasized, adding that an award scheme will soon be introduced to recognize the best-performing assemblies.
Madam Linda Ocloo also urged assemblies to enforce sanitation by-laws, step up public education efforts, partner with the private sector, and prepare for the upcoming National Sanitation Day Exercise, to be launched by President John Dramani Mahama.
