The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO) says it has begun investigations into the power system disturbance that caused electricity outages across parts of the country in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29.
The outage left many homes and businesses without power, with Ghanaians taking to social media to express frustration over the disruption. Many users on X and Facebook complained about being abruptly woken up by the blackout, while others questioned the cause of the outage and called for a quick restoration of electricity.
In a statement, the transmission company said the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a disturbance at about 3:11 am, triggering the simultaneous shutdown of some power generation plants.
According to GRIDCO, the incident led to an interruption in electricity supply to affected areas.
“The disturbance resulted in the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants across the national power system, leading to interruption of electricity supply,” the company said.
GRIDCO said engineers and system operators have activated established restoration procedures and are working with other power sector institutions to restore electricity as quickly as possible.
“Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety,” the statement noted.
The company also disclosed that a technical investigation is underway to determine what triggered the disturbance.
“At the same time, a comprehensive technical investigation has commenced to determine the precise cause of this system event,” GRIDCO said.
It apologised to customers affected by the outage and appealed for patience while restoration efforts continue.
“GRIDCO sincerely apologises for the inconvenience and appreciates the patience and understanding of the public during this period. We remain fully committed to restoring supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible and will provide further updates as more information becomes available,” the company added.
