The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has condemned the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) for threatening to punish nurses and midwives who participated in the association’s recent industrial action.
In a press release available to Metro TV, the GRNMA expressed outrage over CHAG’s plan to demote, repost, or withhold salaries and allowances from nurses and midwives who took part in the strike.
The association described these measures as “draconian” and an attempt to intimidate its members.
“We unequivocally condemn these intimidation tactics that seek to undermine our right to peaceful assembly and protest,” the GRNMA stated.
“The act of targeting individuals who stand up for their rights not only threatens the principles of justice and fairness but also jeopardizes the very ethos of our profession, which is built on care, compassion, and solidarity.”
The GRNMA reminded CHAG that nurses and midwives working in their facilities are paid by the government and have the right to join a trade union and participate in industrial actions.
“Under section 10(d) of the Labour Act, a worker has the right to join a trade union of his choice,” the association noted.
The GRNMA assured its members working in CHAG facilities that it will take action if they are punished for participating in the strike.
“We will use every legitimate means not to hesitate to lay down our tools in support of our colleagues working in those facilities,” the association warned.
“We want to assure all nurses and midwives working in CHAG facilities who participated in the GRNMA strike that the leadership of the association will take CHAG on if they touch any nurse or midwife working in their facilities,” the GRNMA emphasized.
The association has urged its members to remain calm and continue with their duties while it continues to fight for the implementation of their collective agreement and protection of their rights as workers.
