GUPS reaffirms constitutional authority, declares unauthorized elections null and void

The Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) has firmly rejected claims of elections and leadership changes allegedly held on December 14, 2025, describing them as unconstitutional and invalid.

In an official statement issued by its National Secretariat, GUPS addressed what it called “misleading publications and claims” circulating on social media and other platforms regarding purported elections and the emergence of new leaders within the Union.

According to the Secretariat, no elections or leadership declarations held on the said date were sanctioned by GUPS, stressing that any such processes are “null, void, and of no legal effect.” The Union cited Article 45 of the GUPS Constitution, which bars the recognition of any leadership structure established outside constitutionally approved procedures.

“The Union does not recognize any individual or group claiming to have been elected through unauthorized processes,” the statement emphasized, adding that such persons do not represent GUPS in any capacity.

Despite the controversy, the National Secretariat assured members and the general public of its commitment to resolving all issues peacefully and lawfully. It stated that GUPS would not allow unconstitutional actions to plunge the Union into disorder or illegality.

Following consultations with the National Executive Committee (NEC) and key stakeholders, and in line with constitutional provisions on emergency situations, GUPS announced the convening of an Emergency Congress to restore constitutional order and address outstanding leadership matters.

The Emergency Congress is scheduled for Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 9:00am to 5:00pm, at the University College of Management Studies (UCOMS). The Secretariat explained that the Congress is being convened after an earlier congress could not be concluded and that all constitutional notice requirements have been met.

The Emergency Congress is expected to provide a lawful platform for resolving pending issues and ensuring a smooth and legitimate transition of leadership within the Union.

The National Secretariat further urged member institutions, students, partners, and the public to disregard all unauthorized flyers, publications, and claims of “president-elect” or “executives-elect,” stating clearly that such claims do not reflect the official position of GUPS.

It concluded by noting that all official communication concerning GUPS would only be issued through the National Secretariat, reaffirming the Union’s commitment to democracy, accountability, unity, and constitutional governance.
