Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has started a major operation, resulting in the disconnection of Standard Water Company and several other businesses in Kasoa. This tough action comes after the company found widespread illegal water connections and water theft in the Awutu Senya East area.
The operation, done with help from National Security staff, found clever ways people were stealing water to avoid paying. GWL investigators learned that Standard Water and another sachet water company were getting water through bypassed lines.
This let them use the water without it ever passing through a meter. Investigators also found a 10-bedroom building with a huge underground tank used to illegally store the stolen water.
GWL officials say the companies took advantage of the system by applying for domestic (home) water meters. They then illegally changed the pipes, using large two-inch pipes to pull the massive amounts of water needed for their businesses. This method completely bypassed the meter and let them skip paying the proper commercial fees.
Solace Akomeah, the Accra West Regional Communications Manager, told the media she is very worried about the large amount of water theft. She stressed that the amount of illegal connections in Kasoa is unacceptable because it directly harms the fair distribution of water to homes and honest businesses. Those caught stealing water will immediately face extra charges and possible prosecution, as GWL is taking a very firm stand against this fraud.
This ongoing operation is a key part of GWL’s bigger plan to fix supply problems and protect the water distribution network. Ghana Water Limited is urging all residents to actively help keep the water supply stable and fair for everyone.
Ms. Akomeah appealed to the public to report any suspected illegal connections, water theft, or meter bypassing right away to the utility company or security agencies to make sure everyone has a reliable water supply.
