The Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has paid a glowing tribute to the late Yaa-Na Abubakari Mahama II, describing him as a “great unifier” whose legacy of peace should be protected for generations.
In a statement following the King’s passing, Mr. Iddrisu said Dagbon had suffered an immense loss.
“Today, Dagbon has lost more than a King; we have lost a great unifier,” he wrote.
The former Minority Leader reflected on the history of the Dagbon Kingdom, noting that the late monarch inherited a rich tradition established by generations of rulers.
He described the Yaa-Na as the monarch of the ancient Kingdom of Dagbon, saying he “stood on the enduring legacy” of his forebears, including Naa Gbewaa and Naa Nyagsi, who helped shape and strengthen the kingdom’s political structure.
The Education Minister said the late king would be remembered for promoting peace and reconciliation in Dagbon.
“Your Majesty, Yaa-Na Abubakari Mahama II, built bridges, inspired reconciliation, and left behind a legacy of peace that will endure for generations,” he said.
He urged the people of Dagbon to honour the late King’s memory by safeguarding the unity he helped restore.
According to him, “the greatest tribute we can pay to your memory is to preserve and strengthen the unity you restored by faithfully upholding our cherished rotational succession tradition.”
Haruna Iddrisu further appealed for the continuation of the kingdom’s succession arrangement, saying, “May an Abudu succeed an Andani, and an Andani succeed an Abudu, so that Dagbon remains united, peaceful, and strong.”
Concluding his tribute, the Tamale South MP offered prayers for the late monarch.
“Farewell to a colossus of unity. May Almighty Allah grant Your Majesty Al-Jannah Firdaus and continue to bless the Kingdom of Dagbon with lasting peace. Rest in perfect peace, Yaa-Na,” he wrote.
