Health Minister To Brief Parliament Today Over Shortage of Vaccines

Following the shortage of certain important vaccines in the country, Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu is expected to appear before parliament today, March 7, 2023 to address the issues.

According to reports, the briefing today is expected to focus on steps taken to address the shortage of the childhood vaccines across the country.

The summons of the Minister for Health was initiated by the Chairman of the Health Committee of Parliament, Nana Ayew Afriyie who felt the need for the House to be briefed on the situation.

Although the Minister of Health was initially expected in the House on February 28, 2023, he failed to honor the invitation incurring the wrath of the Minority. Former Minority Chief Whip and a member of the Health Committee of Parliament, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka described the absence as disrespectful from the Health Minister.

He argued that Mr. Agyemang-Manu must be subpoenaed for disrespecting the Health Committee of Parliament.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has acknowledged the vaccine shortages and attributed the situation to the free fall of the cedi against major trading currencies, especially the dollar.

According to the Paediatric Society of Ghana, the reports are just the tip of the iceberg since more facilities are recording an outbreak of measles.
