Heated exchange over dance request abruptly ends vetting of Justice Srem-Sai

The vetting of Deputy Attorney General and Justice Minister-designate, Justice Srem-Sai, on Wednesday, February 26, was abruptly brought to a close following a heated exchange between the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, and Ranking Member, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

It all started when Afenyo-Markin requested that Justice Srem-Sai demonstrate a particular dance, arguing that it was about learning Ghana’s culture.

However, Bernard Ahiafor overruled the request, deeming it inappropriate for the setting.

Afenyo-Markin took exception to the ruling, accusing Chairman Ahiafor of being “whimsical and capricious” in his handling of proceedings. When ordered to withdraw his remarks, Afenyo-Markin refused, leading to a standoff.

Chairman Ahiafor eventually asserted his authority, stating that Afenyo-Markin’s question might be his last.

The dispute led to the premature termination of the vetting session.

Justice Srem-Sai, a law expert from the University of Ghana, was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to support Attorney General Dominic Ayine.
