Henry Asante Twum clarifies Black Stars captaincy structure amid rumors

The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has clarified the captaincy structure of the Black Stars.

In an interview with Metro TV, he revealed that Jordan Ayew has been appointed as the substantive captain of the Black Stars. Thomas Partey is the first vice-captain, Mohammed Kudus is the second vice-captain, and Alexander Djiku the third vice-captain.

“I mentioned that it’s not about individual aspirations; it’s about what we want to achieve together, about believing in the plan, and about believing in the vision,” he told Michael Kofi Oduro.

“The coach has decided to appoint Jordan Ayew as captain, with Thomas Partey as the first vice-captain, Mohammed Kudus as the second vice-captain, and Alexander Djiku as the third vice-captain. These players are aware of the structure and the order,” he added.

During Ghana’s recent game at the Accra Sports Stadium against Chad, eyebrows were raised when Thomas Partey appeared surprised and somewhat confused after receiving the captain’s armband from Ayew, who had been substituted.

The Arsenal midfielder, after taking the armband, briefly spoke with Djiku and glanced toward the bench before wearing it. This incident led to speculation, with some suggesting there might be tension between the players.

However, Asante Twum has dismissed these comments, explaining that Partey wanted to pass the captain’s band to another player because he knew he was about to be substituted.

When asked about reports suggesting that Thomas Partey had rejected the assistant captain role, Asante Twum refuted the rumors. He praised the team’s cohesion and reiterated that their main focus is on securing a spot at the World Cup.

Ghana after six games in the World Cup qualifiers sit top of Group I with 15 points, 3 points more than second placed Comoros.
