Hepatitis B infections rising in Efutu Municipality

The Effutu Municipality of the Central Region is recording an alarming rate of Hepatitis B virus infections as 68 pregnant women and 148 children have tested positive to the virus.

The Hepatitis B virus is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis virus which could be easily contracted from a victim through contact with body fluid and this could be either through sexual contact, blood contact, or even through saliva fluid.

A recent exercise that saw a total of 2106 residents of the screened resulted in 68 pregnant women testing positive to the disease.

The children population within the constituency saw over 148 positive cases while the youthful population saw 189 also testing positive for the virus.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency pledged to champion the fight against the Hepatitis B virus.

He said the virus is gradually spreading through local communities of Effutu and sending individuals to their early graves.

According to Alexander Afenyo Markin, the rate at which the virus is spreading is alarming thus the need to commence vaccination and sensitization to reduce further spread.

The MP also made available an amount of GHC 1 million to help in screening and sensitization while urging constituents to be wary of the diseases and cooperate with health experts when they visit them.
