President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, aged 88.
In a heartfelt statement posted on his social media platforms, Mahama said, the late Pope Francis’ legacy of “compassion, humility, and commitment to social justice will continue to inspire generations.”
Mahama fondly recalled visiting the Vatican with his wife, Lordina, where they met Pope Francis.
He extended condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and Catholic faithful in Ghana on behalf of his family and the people of Ghana.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace,” Mahama prayed, as he mourned the passing of the influential spiritual leader.
Pope Francis was known for his attention to the poor and marginalized. He advocated for civil union laws, endorsed the decriminalization of homosexuality worldwide, and emphasized the importance of caring for the environment. His encyclical Laudato Si’ became a landmark document on climate change and sustainability.
During his 11-year papacy, Pope Francis became known for his unconventional approach, often delivering off-the-cuff remarks and engaging in spontaneous encounters with people. His emphasis on compassion, mercy, and service inspired millions worldwide. As a leader, he showed that faith and action could go hand-in-hand, promoting a more just and equitable society.
