Homicide Unit probes death of 16-year-old player linked to coach

The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the death of 16-year-old Ransford Owusu, a junior player at Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, following allegations that he was sexually abused by his coach before his death.

According to a statement from the Police, the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department is leading the probe into the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death, which occurred in February this year.

Ransford’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, told the Amasaman Police that her son fell ill and died on February 28, 2025.

She said he had confided in her before his death that his coach, identified as Anyass Ibrahim, had sexually assaulted him.

The case was later taken over by the Homicide Unit. On November 4, 2025, Ibrahim was arrested and questioned. He has since been granted bail and is required to report regularly to the CID Headquarters as investigations continue.

Medical reports submitted by Ransford’s mother from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Kumasi suggest that the teenager was treated for liver and kidney complications before his death.

The Police say they have secured a court order to obtain the full medical records from both hospitals after earlier formal requests were declined.

Meanwhile, investigators have expanded their probe after a video surfaced online showing the suspect, Ibrahim, in a compromising situation with a minor.

Police are urging anyone with credible information related to the case to contact the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters or report to the nearest police station.
