The Member of Parliament for Techiman South and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has called for housing and accommodation challenges in Ghana to be treated as a national priority, describing the situation as long overdue for urgent attention.
Speaking on the Home Owners Show on Metro TV on Saturday, May 16, 2026, he said the country’s housing deficit requires a combination of both public and private sector interventions to address growing demand.
He stressed the need for bold and immediate policy decisions to help address accommodation shortages across the country.
“National disaster happens all around us and the issue of housing is a critical one and requires national priority,” he said.
Mr. Korsah further argued that Ghana must begin a broader national conversation on housing if rental challenges are to be effectively resolved.
“A national review is needed in addressing housing deficits in the country,” he stated.
He also raised concerns about the rental sector, describing it as increasingly exploitative due to what he said was the weak capacity of the Rent Control Department.
According to him, the department lacks the resources to effectively carry out its mandate, while its absence in many parts of the country worsens the situation for tenants.
“The Rent Control Department has no physical presence in over 200 districts across the country, so people have to travel all the way to Accra to lodge accommodation complaints,” he lamented.
He added that this gap in enforcement has made many tenants reluctant to report cases of rental abuse.
