The New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, has confirmed she will contest in the Ablekuma North rerun elections on Friday, marking a significant turnaround from her earlier decision to boycott.
Speaking to Neat FM’s Mc Jerry, Madam Afriyie said she is determined to win all 19 polling stations where the rerun will take place.
Her renewed resolve follows the dismissal of her legal bid to stop the Electoral Commission from organising the rerun.
The initial position of the New Patriotic Party in the constituency had been to boycott the process altogether.
However, in a surprising twist, the candidate has changed course, encouraging supporters to fully participate.
The rerun, scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, is expected to be keenly contested. The National Democratic Congress candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, is also confident of a strong performance and hopes to clinch victory.
Madam Afriyie believes winning the rerun will cement her acclamation and clear any doubts about her support in the constituency.
Background of court case
Earlier this week, the High Court dismissed an application by Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, which sought to stop a planned rerun of elections in 19 polling stations.
Justice Ali Baba Abature ruled that the Electoral Commission must be allowed to fulfil its constitutional duty to ensure representation for the people of Ablekuma North, adding that halting the rerun would deny constituents their right to have a Member of Parliament.
Akua Afriyie had argued that the rerun contradicted a previous High Court ruling ordering the Electoral Commission to complete collation and declare a winner from the December 7, 2024, election.
However, the court found her injunction lacked merit and said any damages could be pursued through the main case if she later succeeds in her substantive challenge.
