Former Member of Parliament for Sekondi and Former Arts, Tourism and Culture Minister, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has firmly distanced himself from any calls for economic collapse amid Ghana’s ongoing energy sector woes, declaring, “I don’t wish for the economy to collapse, never.”
Speaking on Metro TV’s GMG program with host Moro Awudu on Wednesday, April 15, Mercer addressed the persistent challenges in the energy sector, including crippling power outages known as “dumsor,” rising fuel costs, and the financial strain on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
He emphasized the need for pragmatic solutions rather than political sabotage.”Ghana’s energy crisis is real, but wishing for collapse helps no one,” Mercer stated.
“We must invest in sustainable power generation, fix billing inefficiencies, and explore renewables like solar to break free from over-reliance on thermal plants.
The government’s recent bond restructuring is a step, but bolder private sector partnerships are essential. He said, he wish the country for better progress but rather not a collapse country.
Ghana’s energy sector tells a tale of bold evolution from heavy dependence on giants like the Akosombo Dam to a diversified powerhouse fueled by natural gas and budding green tech. By 2026, it’s at a pivotal juncture: navigating the “death zone” of soaring manufacturing costs while the government tackles crippling legacy debts to steady the grid.
