Kwame Asare Obeng, better known as A-Plus, the Independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the salary he earns as a legislator. In an interview with Adom FM on Thursday, April 3, 2025, A-Plus shared that, after all deductions, he takes home a modest GH₵15,000 per month—a figure he deems insufficient for the demanding work of a Member of Parliament.
The former musician turned politician reflected on his life before entering politics, revealing that his earnings in the private sector were far higher than his current pay. A-Plus explained that in his previous career, he often earned more on a daily basis than he now makes for an entire month in Parliament.
“For me, my main focus is solving people’s problems. That’s why I started the People’s Project—to help people. I don’t see it as an issue; if someone approaches me with a concern and I know I can help, I will. But being an MP is extremely difficult, and the salary is not good enough. At the end of the month, you receive just GH₵15,000,” he explained.
If I look at my bank statements from 2020, it’s clear that I was making a lot more money before entering politics. In just 24 hours, I could earn more than what I now receive for an entire month as an MP, he stated.
Despite this financial challenge, A-Plus praised the efforts and dedication of his parliamentary colleagues, acknowledging that his understanding of the role has shifted since becoming an MP. He admitted that, like many others before him, he had underestimated the rigorous demands and responsibilities MPs face.
His candid comments bring attention to the often-overlooked financial realities that MPs face, challenging perceptions about the lucrative nature of political office.
