I reject completely the notion that Ghana was founded by one man – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has rejected the idea that the country was founded by a single individual, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

In his Founders’ Day address, Mr. Akufo-Addo said the struggle for independence was a collective effort spanning several generations.

He acknowledged Nkrumah’s significant contributions but emphasized that other groups and individuals played vital roles in achieving freedom and independence.

Akufo-Addo cited the Aborigines Rights Protection, the British West African Nation Congress, and the United Gold Coast Convention as examples of organizations that contributed to Ghana’s independence.

His comments come after Parliament designated August 4 as Founders’ Day in 2019 to honour the collective efforts of those who fought for independence, while also recognizing Mr. Nkrumah’s role with a separate memorial day on September 21.

Some individuals and groups had protested the decision, arguing that Nkrumah single-handedly founded Ghana.

But Mr. Akufo-Addo stressed that Ghana’s founding was a collective effort, saying: “I speak to you this evening, rejecting completely, the notion that Ghana was founded by one man.”
