Mali’s National Men’s Football Team coach, Tom Saintfiet, has revealed that he had discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) about potentially taking the helm of the Black Stars.
Saintfiet made this disclosure during a pre-match press conference ahead of Mali’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ghana.
Saintfiet’s impressive stint with Gambia, where he led the team to their maiden quarterfinals appearance at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), caught the attention of several countries, including Ghana. However, the GFA ultimately appointed former Brighton and Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton as the Black Stars’ head coach.
Reflecting on the opportunity, Saintfiet said, “It’s true that at that moment, after AFCON, around AFCON, there were talks…but I had a feeling I was close to the Black Stars job.”
Saintfiet took the reins of Mali’s national team on August 28, replacing Eric Chelle. Under his guidance, Mali has secured four wins and two draws, successfully qualifying for the 2025 AFCON. In their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Mali boasts two wins and a draw under Saintfiet’s leadership.
The highly anticipated match between Ghana and Mali is set for Monday, September 9, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium, kickstarting at 19:00 GMT
