NDC candidate for the Assin North By-Election and former Member of Parliament for the constituency, James Gyakye Quayson has reiterated his confidence that he will win the seat despite the numerous court processes.
The candidate is facing criminal prosecution over his citizenship and allegiance before contesting the 2020 Parliamentary Elections in the Assin North Constituency.
After winning the seat in 2020, the Supreme Court declared the results null and void for failure to fully renounce his Canadian citizenship as required by the electoral laws of the country.
Although the criminal prosecution is ongoing despite the upcoming by-election, Mr. Quayson says no amount of intimidation by the governing party and the judicial system will derail his campaign.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday, he said he is not perturbed by the distraction adding that he is prepared to stand and fight for his constituents and nothing will change that desire.
He further expressed his confidence that the people of Assin North will still vote for him despite his current predicament.
“Even if they give me a bedroom in the court, Assin North will still vote for me. If they want to see me in the court every hour which means I can’t leave, they should give me a chamber and I will sleep there. I’m still going to stand strong and tall and fight for my people,” he said.
The Assin North bye-election is scheduled to take place on June 27, 2023. Four parliamentary candidates are contesting the race. Balloting has also concluded with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Charles Opoku picking the first slot.
A candidate on the ticket of the Liberal Party of Ghana, Sefanu Bernice Enyonam, picked second while the National Democratic Congress’ James Gyakye Quayson picked the third position.
