National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has expressed outrage over a recent video showing an assistant headmaster in a compromised situation with a female student, saying he would have physically confronted the school authority if it involved his own child.
Making an appearance on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, October 3, Nii Lante Vanderpuye said the incident reflects the moral decay spreading through Ghana’s senior high schools and linked it to the breakdown of discipline in the education system.
“As a parent, I get worried,” he said. “Because what happened, seriously, if I were the parent of the girl, I would just go and give the headmaster some slaps.”
His comment drew immediate pushback from Moro Awudu the host of the show, who questioned his resort to violence.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye, however, stood by his statement, insisting that such misconduct should never be tolerated in schools.
“You see, that is why people say violence. What is violence?” he asked rhetorically.
“But why would you want to slap the headmaster? Asked Moro Awudu.
He interjected “And you think such a person should not be given some lashes.”
The DRIP boss said many teachers and parents are quietly alarmed by how moral discipline has deteriorated in schools since corporal punishment was banned.
He argued that the lack of strict disciplinary measures has emboldened students to misbehave without fear of consequences.
“Teachers are not comfortable with the environment, but they can’t talk about it,” he said.
“We must look at all these things and see how we can reform the code of conduct and behaviour of students, teachers, and lecturers.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service has since removed the Assistant Headmaster (Academic) of KNUST Senior High School, Charles Akwasi Aidoo, after the viral video showed him fondling the female student.
