Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has described illegal mining as an “economic sabotage” and “an act of environmental terrorism,” emphasising the damage it causes to livelihoods, ecosystems, and the integrity of the entire mining industry.
Armah Kofi Buah, who spoke on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, at the inauguration of the Association of China-Ghana Mining (ACGM) in Accra, used the occasion to make a strong declaration about the government’s unyielding stance against illegal mining.
He made it clear that the Ghanaian government will not tolerate any form of illegal activity within the sector.
“There will be no leniency, no exceptions, and no cover for those who flout our laws,” Buah firmly stated.
He highlighted the importance of cooperation between the government and the newly established ACGM to drive forward innovation and enhance Ghana’s mining capabilities while adhering to strict environmental standards.
Armah Kofi Buah also pointed to China’s technical expertise in underground mining, low-grade oil development, and mining-related training, which offers significant opportunities for Ghana.
He expressed optimism that these collaborations will help Ghana improve the efficiency of its mining operations and increase global competitiveness.
The government has made it abundantly clear that anyone involved in illegal mining will face the full force of the law, regardless of nationality, political affiliation, or business influence. “Illegal mining undermines the development of our communities, poisons our water bodies, and degrades our land,” Buah emphasised, reaffirming the government’s zero-tolerance approach.
The minister also praised the ACGM’s commitment to promoting corporate social responsibility, with a specific focus on the welfare of mining communities. He welcomed the association’s Community Development Fund, an initiative aimed at ensuring that mining activities benefit local communities and contribute to inclusive growth.
In closing, Lands Minister Armah Kofi Buah reiterated that responsible mining is not just a policy but a shared obligation for future generations, and he expressed confidence in the promising partnership between Ghana and China.
He believes the ACGM will play a key role in transforming Ghana’s mining sector into one that is both economically robust and environmentally sustainable.
