The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Rashid Ibrahim, has dismissed claims that he is politically aligned and not doing enough to challenge government over rising hostel fees.
According to him, his advocacy remains firmly focused on the welfare, safety, and accommodation concerns of students across the country.
Speaking in an interview on Home Owners Show on Metro TV with host Hanna Atiase on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Mr Ibrahim stressed that student leadership is not driven by political party affiliations.
“Student elections do not ride on the back of party colours,” he stated.
Addressing allegations of partisanship, Mr Ibrahim argued that his engagements with the Rent Control Department should be seen as a direct effort to hold government accountable, since the agency operates under state authority.
“I’ve been in touch with the Rent Control Commissioner over the inconsiderate hostel price hikes and the dilapidated state of some buildings,” he said.
He maintained that his actions demonstrate a commitment to confronting the challenges students face, particularly the increasing cost of accommodation.
“I am not fighting a political party. My fight is for the interest of Ghanaian students,” he emphasised.
