Impeachment probe: “A ruse to unjustifiably remove me” – Suspended CJ Torkornoo tells court

Suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, has told the Supreme Court that the impeachment proceedings against her are “a mockery of justice and a ruse to unjustifiably remove” her from office.

In a supplementary affidavit filed at the Supreme Court, Gertrude Torkornoo expressed concerns about the fairness of the probe, citing several instances where she believes her rights were violated.

“All article 146 proceedings with the exception of the one I am being subjected to, had hitherto, been held in a judicial facility, specifically, the Courts Complex. The location of proceedings affecting me to a cordoned high security facility boggles the mind,” she stated.

The Chief Justice also pointed out that the committee’s decision to allow petitioners to call witnesses without testifying themselves is “completely offensive to known rules of procedure regulating the work of committees/commissions of inquiry.”

She further alleged that she and her lawyers were denied access to telephones and laptops during the proceedings, while counsel for the petitioners were allowed to keep theirs.

“The persistent violations of my constitutional rights show that the whole proceedings initiated against me are a mockery of justice and a ruse to unjustifiably remove me from office as the Chief Justice,” Madam Gertrude Torkornoo averred.

The suspended Chief Justice is seeking an injunction to halt the impeachment proceedings, arguing that it would undermine judicial independence and the security of tenure of judges.
